AI-empowered Edge Cloud Continuum for Self-aware Cognitive Computing Environments (COGNIFOG) Horizon Europe Project Kicks Off!
The COGNIFOG project held its kick-off meeting on January 12th and 13th in Paris, France. This Research and Innovation Action project, funded under HORIZON Europe, officially began on January 1st, 2023 and will run for a total of 36 months.
Mr. Sozos Karageorgiou, R&D Technical Project Manager, represented eBOS at the meeting, which was led by the Project Coordinator, Dr. Selma Azaiez of Commissariat A L Energie Atomique Et Aux Energies Alternatives (CEA). The meeting was attended by the project’s 12 partners and included presentations by the partners on the project’s vision and objectives, as well as an overview of the overall project expectations and guidelines by the European Commission’s Project Officer. The partners also discussed the project’s work plan, challenges, risks, and implementation schedule.
Next generation enablers, such as IoT, AI and cloud computing, open new opportunities to deal with the world’s current and future societal, environmental, and economic challenges. However, they come with significant data management challenges. According to IDC, the total amount of data generated only by connected devices will exceed 40 trillion gigabytes by 2025.
In most of the current systems, data storage and analysis happen on centralized locations on the cloud. This is pushing network capacity to its limits. Furthermore, centralized storage and processing lead to single point of failure situations, which are critically inefficient in case of disasters and crisis. Our world is continuously living natural disasters, health crisis, climate change and security threats that show the importance of resilient and energy-efficient information systems.
COGNIFOG targets those challenges and proposes to build a Cognitive Fog Framework to: (i) reduce energy consumption and latency in next generation IT systems by reducing the network traffic, by analysing data at the edge in a distributed manner, closer to where data are generated, rather than routing them through the communication networks to a centralised data center; (ii) reduce OPEX and faster service provisioning by providing a cognitive, self-adaptive framework with minimum or no human intervention, with dynamic provisioning of computing, storage and networking resources along the far-edge-to-edge-to-cloud path; (iii) ensure European leadership by providing an open interoperable framework with open APIs for application developers to rapidly create and deploy applications benefiting the edge-cloud continuum on top of heterogenous IoT/IT systems.
COGNIFOG will validate its key results in three representative application domains, namely, critical collaboration missions, smart health and smart industry. With a consortium of 12 European partners, leaders in their domains, COGNIFOG will be a cornerstone in the cognitive fog computing domain.
In COGNIFOG, eBOS will lead the development of the application layer components such as the front-end dashboard and graphical user interface for the users of the systems. Additionally, eBOS will lead the development of Application APIs which will enable the interfacing of 3rd party applications in COGNIFOG in an easy and user-friendly manner. eBOS will capture the technical specifications to create a mapping of the descriptive list of requirements regarding system functionality and requirements with the respective Unified Modelling Language diagrams. Visual web-based programming tools will be used for the dashboard development, ensuring the application robustness, higher performance, multi-platform support on popular operating systems, improved quality and easy maintenance. Furthermore, eBOS will develop the necessary packages for system deployment as a web-based service, to enable multi-tenancy and concurrency. eBOS will also define and implement REST APIs based on open standards to enable software developers to define API calls with a high granularity, which simplify the logic required to provision complex services, thus providing interoperability between their applications and COGNIFOG. Such APIs will support only secure connections with authentication.
Moreover, eBOS will lead the development of a coherent strategy carefully designed to deliver outreach, exploitation, dissemination, communication, and training activities of the project that will ensure a lasting and effective wide scale impact. eBOS will also focus on implementing the dissemination and communication strategy, develop and deploy information, tools, channels and platforms for the targeted stakeholders, and engage in wider dissemination of the content developed within the project. eBOS will also be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of the project’s website and social media channels and with the support of all consortium partners will also disseminate key project’s results towards their wide range of clusters and associations.
The COGNIFOG project has received funding from Horizon Europe, under Grant Agreement No. 101092968.
