Another Horizon Europe Project - COBALT Kicks Off!

On November 28th & 29th 2023, the COBALT project on “Certification for Cybersecurity in EU ICT using Decentralized Digital Twinning (DT)” held its physical kick-off meeting (KoM) in Athens, Greece. This 36-month EU-funded Innovation Action, funded under the Horizon Europe Work Programme, officially started on the 1st of November 2023.

Dr. Loizos Christofi (R&D Director) and Mr. Thanasis Christofides (R&D Project Manager) participated in the KoM, led by Dr. Akis Kourtis, representing the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, as the coordinator of COBALT.

The meeting was attended by the project’s 14 consortium partners and included partners’ presentations of the vision and objectives of the project, as well as an overview of the overall project expectations and guidelines by the European Commission’s Project Officer. Partners also discussed the project’s work plan, tasks, challenges, risks identified and implementation schedules.

The project envisions dealing with current challenges faced in cybersecurity certification, especially ones where the integration of different modules and technologies, such as Industrial AI and Quantum Computing, create security discrepancies and discontinuities, as well as inefficiencies due to the lack of a unified certification model for cybersecurity in ICT. To that end, COBALT will build an open and unified information model for EU certification of ICT products and Quantum Computing processes and services, focusing on trusted sharing of information among various stakeholders. Furthermore, it will develop Continuous Certification functionality leveraging Digital Twinning (DT) to model, analyse and certify different processes from different verticals, and verify whether by certifying the DT its physical counterpart is effectively certified. Moreover, it will address Quantum High Performance Computing and AI certification, by assessing and analysing existing procedures and processes, while also showcasing the developed framework in a set of cutting-edge pilot use cases focusing on Industry 4.0 (I4.0), Quantum, and ICT infrastructure.

eBOS will lead the effort towards maximizing the impact of the COBALT results through market analysis and strategy definition, socio-economical sustainability analysis, ecosystem business models, dissemination, communication and awareness campaigns, standardization and empowering European cybersecurity certification. Furthermore, eBOS will have significant involvement in developing the techniques for assessing and managing the risk associated with the target of evaluation during its whole life cycle as well as the development of the COBALT Continuous Certification Toolkit. In addition, eBOS will participate in the integration of the COBALT ecosystem and the demonstrations on the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and Quantum domains, which will showcase the advantages of the COBALT unified certification framework.
