eBOS leads the R&D way in cyber defence, by putting Cyprus on the European defence map

Through its participation as the coordinator of the new “HERMES” project, eBOS is placed among the six Cypriot SMEs that were selected to participate in five projects of the European Commission’s European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) for 2020. The HERMES project – Advanced Design of the HERMES Data Exchange Platform supporting the Cyber Defence of Autonomous Military Systems – is another major achievement of the company’s Research and Development (R&D) department, in the successful journey of eBOS.

On August 26th, 2021, the Cyprus Ministry of Defence hailed this as a significant success for local R&D in the sector and underlined that Cyprus can contribute in a concrete way to the development of Europe’s defence potential. “The participation of Cypriot companies will contribute to developing local defence research, innovation and technology and at the same time create opportunities for new job creations”, the Ministry added.

HERMES is a 24-month EU-funded project with total funding of €2.5M. The consortium is composed of 4 SMEs (GT Cyber Technologies – Estonia, ITTI Sp. Z.o.o. – Poland, Invisible Things Lab GmbH – Germany and eBOS – Cyprus, as the Coordinator) with strong expertise in software development and cybersecurity. HERMES was launched on December 1st. It focuses on the design of the HERMES Data Exchange Platform for the Cyber Defence of Autonomous Military Systems. Its specific objectives are to:

  • Enable automation and autonomy in cybersecurity operations;
  • Improve controlled information sharing of high-quality cybersecurity data; and
  • Facilitate burden-sharing collaboration and outsourcing of cybersecurity data management.
    As a system, HERMES provides a foundation that addresses the challenges of overloading a cybersecurity system with poor quality, untimely, and irrelevant cybersecurity information:
  • For the benefit of cybersecurity experts, HERMES will help manage the breadth and depth of cybersecurity knowledge necessary for cyber information superiority.
  • For cybersecurity systems, HERMES will help feed data to cybersecurity applications, increasing their ability to inter-operate and function autonomously.

HERMES also addresses the need for improved sharing and exploitation of cybersecurity data and information. eBOS, apart from its project coordination role, will lead the project’s quality assurance, ensuring high standard and quality outputs, and also act as the project’s Innovation manager, leading activities for identifying and maximising the impact of key exploitable results of the project. In addition, eBOS participates to the feasibility study, design, and technical implementation of the HERMES Data Exchange Platform and to the dissemination and commercialisation activities of the project’s key outcomes. HERMES has received funding from the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP). Project Identifier EDIDP-SME-2020-099-HERMES.
