eBOS Participates in SUNRISE-6G, a New 6G SNS Phase 2, EU-funded Project to Advance 6G Research in Europe

eBOS is proud to announce its participation in a new Phase 2 6G SNS JU (Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking) project co-funded by the EC, titled SUNRISE-6G, set to research, design and develop innovative solutions for 6G architectures and technologies in Europe.

The project, which will kick start on the 1st January 2024 aims to integrate all private and public infrastructures under a massively scalable internet-like architecture. SUNRISE-6G similarly aspires to create a federation of 6G test infrastructures in a pan-European facility that will support converged Testing as a Service (TaaS) workflows and tools, a unified catalogue of 6G enablers publicly accessible by experimenters, and cross-domain vertical application onboarding. Experimentation and vertical application onboarding are offered via a Tenant Web Portal, that acts as a single-entry point to the facility, serving end users (e.g., experimenters) and tenants (e.g., vertical developers, infrastructure owners, 6G component manufactures). 

The project execution is based on 4 pillars, delivering: (a) the Implementation of new 6G enablers, complementary to existing ones being developed in SNS Phase 1 projects, (b) A truly scalable and 3GPP-compliant Federation solution that provides access to heterogeneous resources and devices from all of Europe, (c) A Federated AI plane aligned with AIaaS and MLOPS paradigms, which promotes a collaborative approach to AI research which benefits immensely from scaling-up datasets and models and (d) a commonly adopted Experimentation Plane, which offers common workflows to experimenters.

SUNRISE-6G is amongst the 27 new research, innovation, and trial projects funded by the EC under the 2nd phase of the 6G SNS JU programme. In particular, it addresses the challenge of providing superior performance via ground-breaking access technologies, such as joint communication and sensing, cell-free, Radio Intelligent Surfaces, and ubiquitous wireless intelligence.

With this second call for proposals, the SNS JU is moving towards more detailed design and system optimisation while integrating micro-electronics and sustainability as key dimensions. The aim is to build first-class 6G technology capacities across Europe, with the aim to strongly contribute to the standardisation efforts.

Overview of the new SNS JU Project Portfolio

Each of the winning projects explores innovative approaches, spanning a comprehensive spectrum of 6G domains. Assessed by an evaluation committee, composed of independent external experts, the proposals were evaluated based on the criteria of excellence, impact, and quality and efficiency of the implementation. The diverse array of projects ensures a multifaceted approach to addressing 6G challenges and promises a wide range of innovative solutions:

Strengthening the underlying structure of 6G networks for increased robustness, adaptability, and efficiency.

Wireless Communication Technologies and Signal Processing:

Exploring advances like Terahertz communications and integrated communication-sensing paradigms.

Communication Infrastructure Technologies and Devices:

Fortifying and expanding the physical and virtual infrastructure to support the new 6G technologies.

Reliable Services and Smart Security:

Ensuring a secure transition to 6G that prioritises user data protection and privacy.

Microelectronics-based Solutions for 6G Networks:

Development and validation of advanced microelectronics solutions for 6G networks.

EU-US 6G R&I Cooperation:

Promoting synergies across industries, academic institutions, and regulatory bodies for holistic 6G development.

Complementary SNS experimental Pan-EU federated Infrastructure:

Establishment and expansion of a Pan-EU experimental infrastructure for 6G, aiming to validate end-to-end 6G architectures.

Addressing broader societal implications of 6G to ensure that technological advancements align with societal needs and benefits.

SNS Large Scale Trials and Pilots with Verticals:

Transposing 6G technologies into real-world applications across sectors like connected and automated mobility, healthcare, smart cities, education and farming.

The EU funding for this new portfolio under the Horizon Europe programme is EUR 130 million. The opening of the third SNS call for proposals is planned for January 2024, with publication of the 2024 R&I Work Programme expected this November.

Role of eBOS in the project:

eBOS’ main technical role is to lead the development of the detailed low-level design of the SUNRISE-6G Portal and the Lifecycle Management experimentation services, as well as their constituent components. Additionally, eBOS will upgrade and offer their State-of-the-Art 5G/6G Testbed for the purposes of the SUNRISE-6G project whilst implementing the proposed modification/configurations to further enhance it and expand it to a federated version of 6G testbeds.

Finally, other than the company’s unique technical expertise, eBOS leads the quality assurance, risk and data management task of the project. In conjunction, eBOS leads the dissemination, communication and hackathon activities ensuring the impact creation and the dissemination of the project’s results to several stakeholder and end-user groups.

The combined EU funding for the first and second call of the SNS JU under the Horizon Europe programme is of around EUR 380 million.
