Flexible and Improved Border-Crossing Experience for Passengers and Authorities: The Horizon Europe Project FLEXI-cross Kicks-Off!

The Kick-off meeting for the FLEXI-cross project took place virtually on the 12th of September 2022, and it was chaired by the Project Coordinator Dr. Giuseppe Vella, who represents Engineering Ingegneria Informatica S.p.A (ENG) in Italy. This 36-month Research and Innovation project is funded under Horizon Europe and officially started on the 1st of September 2022.

Ms. Giota Lilli (R&D Project Manager), Mr. Thomas Azrak (R&D Project Manager), Mr. Philippos Philippou (R&D Senior Project Manager) and Dr. Konstantina Panagiotou R&D Program Manager participated in the kick-off meeting, representing eBOS Technologies.

FLEXI-cross targets the deployment and continuous validation of a toolkit of innovative border-checking solutions in real operational environments. These solutions will deliver increased security and reliability of border checks for people and goods, which can be enabled by innovative technologies [5G and Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Big Data and Predictive Analytics, Cloud and Edge Computing and more], aiming at enhancing and improving the border management capabilities.

The resulting flexibility and dynamicity of border check planning will offer novel capabilities, such as the dynamic deployment of checkpoints and support via mobile applications for border personnel while guaranteeing a high level of security, the privacy of personal data, and the protection of people’s fundamental rights. The design and architecture of the implemented solutions will be based on the analysis of the technical and service requirements of the EU border authorities (e.g., Frontex) and will offer seamless integration with existing systems and devices currently utilised by them.

eBOS’ role in the project will be to perform the integration, configuration and testing of the FLEXI-cross toolkit, as well as to support the development of the data processing tools, while ensuring interoperability, adequate performance and scalability for large-scale use during the project and beyond. In particular, design and implement the graphical Human Machine Interfaces by leveraging EBOS bespoke WiseBOS Platform, which is tailored for the development of such dashboards.

eBOS will also lead the impact maximisation of the project, which apart from the dissemination and communication activities, will design and maintain the project’s website and social media channels. eBOS will also be responsible for the social and policy innovations throughout the project. From the exploitation side, eBOS expects to advance the knowledge of their personnel and reinforce their understanding of providing improved experiences for both passengers and border authorities’ staff, thus extending the company’s research and development activities.
