New H2020 ICT-41 5G project 5G-ERA kicks off!

On the 14th and 15th of January 2021, a new 5G Research& Innovation project 5G-ERA: 5G Enhanced Robot Autonomy, held a successful online kick-off meeting with the participation of 13 partners under the coordination of Mr. Rafael Lopez from Robotnik Automation SLL.  

5G-ERA is part of 5G-PPP Phase 3b projects aiming to provide an enhanced 5G experimentation facility and relevant NetApps for 3rd party application developers so as to provide them with a 5G experimentation playground to test and qualify their applications. In particular, it will enhance robotic autonomy using 5G with the ambition of the user-centric paradigm of integrating vertical knowledge into existing standardized 5G testing framework to improve Quality of Experience (QoE) for vertical customers. Within the framework of the project, NetApps, which are virtual network functions chained across different domains, will be developed and stored in an online open repository for open access by 3rd party application developers. To validate the capabilities and effectiveness of the 5G-ERA enhanced experimentation facility a number of use cases in the sectors of Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR), Healthcare, Industry 4.0 and Transport will be tested.

Ms. Maria-Andrea R. Anastasi R&D Project Manager, and Mr. Philippos Philippou, R&D Senior Project Manager, represented eBOS at the online kick-off-meeting. During the meeting all the partners introduced their organisations and the discussion was mainly focused on the role of each partner in the project, but also the work that needs to be performed under each Work Package, especially during the first 6 months of the project. Within this 2-day meeting, the partners have agreed on the project’s common vision and the framework towards achieving its objectives.

In 5G-ERA, eBOS will lead the project’s Dissemination & Exploitation activities and will be responsible for the implementation of the project’s communication plan. eBOS will also lead the visualization and user interface development of the project. Additionally, eBOS will:

  • Contribute to the 5G testing framework, the validation and verification and field trials for the use cases. 
  • Participate in the analysis of task requirements, environmental demands and vertical user needs for robotic applications with 5G enhanced robot autonomy as well as the specification of architecture & protocols.  
  • Contribute to the effort to identify users’ intent and alignment with the E2E networking. 

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101016681
