Next Generation Integrated Sensing and Analytical System for Monitoring and Assessing Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure and Health

Duration: 01/07/2022 – 30/06/2026   |   Total Funding: € 7,559,039

Challenges

NextGEM envisions assuring safety for EU citizens when employing existing and future EMF-based telecommunication technologies. This will be accomplished by generating relevant knowledge that ascertains appropriate prevention and control/actuation actions of electromagnetic fields (EMF) exposure in residential, public, and occupational settings.

The project’s results will be consolidated in a go-to tool to maximise NextGEM’s social impact, termed the European NextGEM Innovation and Knowledge Hub (NIKH) for EMF and Health. NIKH is envisioned to be utilised by European regulatory authorities, the scientific community and the general public to provide insides on how EMF exposures affect health.

Three Use Cases will be used to demonstrate and validate NextGEM’s results that are designed to cover different groups of geographical and socio-economic conditions and vulnerable people exposed to different signals:

  • Potential effects of indoor levels of radio frequency exposure of vulnerable people on reproduction and development.
  • Optimised outdoor urban planning and 5G design architecture and investigations for public awareness of cancer-related health hazards.
  • Health effects of exposure to mmWave EMF in indoor and outdoor environments.

Project Objectives

The project objectives are to

1

Measure and model single and multiple radio frequency sources, in changing EMF exposure patterns, based on innovative monitoring technologies

2

Assess health effects and elucidate action mechanisms of different and combined EMF exposure patterns by experimental and human studies

3

Identify causal links and perform risk assessment regarding EMF exposure and selected health outcomes while providing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data

4

Develop NextGEM Innovation Knowledge Hub (NIKH) and validate it through real-life case studies

5

Maximise NextGEM’s impact through wide dissemination, communication, standardisation, exploitation, capacity building and clustering activities

Role in the Project

In NextGEM, eBOS will design the Graphical User Interface (GUI), the Application Programming Interface of NIKH and the NextGEM Mobile Application with the primary goal of supporting citizen self-awareness of EMF exposure.

Through the GUI, NIKH users will also be able to access the Knowledge Base of the project, which will contain the project’s activity and outputs (such as public deliverables, guidelines, and policy recommendations) alongside relevant scientific work.

eBOS is the Work Package (WP) leader of WP8: Impact Maximisation through Stakeholder Engagement and Awareness Activities. Through it, eBOS will be responsible in coordinating with the participating partners in developing and implementing the dissemination and communication strategy and plan and all related activities. eBOS will also create and regularly update the NextGEM website and social media of the project.

Moreover, eBOS will be responsible for performing project quality evaluation criteria, continuous monitoring of deliverables, triggering quality assurance project reviews, risk assessment procedures, evaluation measurements and producing risk and quality review reports.
