The 6G4Society Projects Kicks Off

The 6G4Society Kick-off Meeting took place physically between the 17th and the 18th of January, 2024, in The Hague, Netherlands. This 24-month Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) project, which officially started on January 1st, 2024, is funded under Horizon Europe programme. Ms. Giota Lilli (R&D Project Manager), participated in the kick-off meeting representing eBOS, chaired by Dr. Monique Calisti, Project Manager on behalf of the Project Coordinator Martel Innovative.

6G4Society aims to employ approaches rooted in ethics, legal studies, and perspectives from social science and humanities (SSH). This strategy enables a comprehensive understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions and underlying mechanisms associated with 6G technology, thereby establishing the groundwork for responsible research and innovation (RRI) in the realm of 6G technology. Leveraging these methodologies, 6GSociety will furnish techniques, models, guidelines, policy alternatives, and operational recommendations for the development of sustainable and socially acceptable 6G technology and its applications. The outcomes of 6G4Society, such as a Technology Acceptance Model for 6G technology, a framework outlining Key Sustainability Indicators, a policy brief, and an operational brief, will undergo validation. This validation process will involve all 6G-SNS JU projects, employing public and user engagement methodologies, as well as incorporating the participation of the 6G-IA Working Groups and their associated projects.

To meet these formidable goals, the 6G4Society project is structured as a consortium, bringing together a diverse set of skills and expertise. The consortium encompasses proficiency in SSH and RRI, as well as expertise in technology, networking coordination and management, communication, and stakeholder engagement. Drawing on extensive experience in 5G-PPP/6G-IA projects and initiatives, the consortium’s partners maintain affiliations with over 20% of the existing JU 6G-SNS initiatives, establishing robust collaboration to successfully attain the project’s objectives.

eBOS role will be to:

  • Lead the efforts on the work implemented under Work Package (WP) 4, in regard to the communication, dissemination, exploitation, and standardisation activities of the project, which deals with all the activities that maximise the impact of the project outcomes;
  • Lead the efforts on the exploitation and sustainability of the project by setting up a continuous market and research watch, and a techno-business-societal assessment of the opportunities for 6G4Society portfolio, as well as ensuring the future exploitation and deployment of the project results;
  • Lead the quality and risk management activities by providing ongoing mitigation strategies and planning;
  • Participate in consumer associations and other events, and promote the project;
  • Contribute to synergy planning with 6G Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) and other initiatives; and
  • Support the coordination with 6G initiatives towards Technology Acceptance Model, and a Common Key Sustainability Indicators Framework.

More information about the project will be soon available on the project website.

6G4Society project has received funding from the SNS JU under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, under Grand Agreement No 101139070.
